Friday, May 2nd Hot Tacos, Cool School Third Annual Taco Night fundraiser at St. Nicholas of Tolentine School, 3741 West 62nd Street. Runs from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Open to parents, parishioners, alumni and all members of the community. Dinner is just $8 a person at the door, $6 via pre-sale. Proceeds will help the ongoing effort to purchase and install air conditioners at the school. Lots of food and fun, all to help a great school!
Saturday, May 17th St. Nick's 'Putt & Party' Golf Starts at 12:30 p.m. at Stony Creek Golf Course, 5850 West 103rd Street, Oak Lawn. Luncheon served at 3:00. Fundraiser to help purchase and install air conditioning at St. Nicholas of Tolentine School. Registration and payment due by April 15. Good cause, great school! Help them out, won't you please? Tuesday, June 3rd West Elsdon Civic Association Quarterly meeting. Open to the public. Starts at 7:30 p.m. in the basement of Divine Word Polish National Catholic Church, 3842 West 57th Street (east door). One of Chicago's oldest neighborhood organizations. This month's guest speaker is 13th Ward Alderman Marty Quinn. If you want to join forces with other good people to build a better West Elsdon, please stop by!
Thursday-Sunday, June 5th-8th St. Joe's Carnival Save the dates! Times and attractions will be announced. Held on the grounds of St. Joseph School, 5641 South 73rd Avenue, Summit (just a half-block west of Portillo's at
56th and Harlem). In addition to great live entertainment, the event features thrilling carnival rides, fun games of skill and chance, and a food tent will offering such traditional carnival treats as hot dogs, hamburgers, brats, pizza, Italian beef, tacos, tamales and corn-on-the-cob. Cotton candy, ice cream, soda and water also will be available. The beer tent will be open as well. During the carnival run there will be special ride offers, including a four-day “unlimited rides” wristband. All St. Joseph parishioners are welcome to attend, as well as everyone in the larger community. Proceeds benefit St. Joseph Parish, which has served Summit, Garfield Ridge and other fine communities since 1902!
Sunday, June 29th Urban Garden Walk Runs from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. A self-guided tour of a handful of the most beautiful and interesting gardens in the Garfield Ridge and Clearing neighborhoods. Gardens belong to members of the Midway Garden Society, who will offer comments about what makes their backyard oases unique. One of the best annual events on the entire Southwest Side. Admission is $5 per person, payable upon arrival at the first stop on the tour (the "lead garden"). More details coming soon. The Southwest Chicago Post was privileged to tag along with cameras on the 2012 Urban Garden Walk. We loved it!
